D Block

<Somewhere in the back of the back of D Block, inside one of the cells designed for the more permanent residents of Azkaban, the tiny, pale heap of skin and bones that made up Delphine Sparrow curled against the far wall. She was asleep, of course, under the same sedation spell that everyone else was subject to. When Delphine dreamed, her mind dredged up scraps of a life that, in waking, she could barely remember. There were children - two beautiful, blue eyed babies; there was a husband she had chased down to marry, there was their godfather milling around the house to help when either parent was preoccupied. She saw flowers and sun and misery, and all of the events that led up to the catatonic, murdering thing she'd become.>

<Awake, as far as Delphine knew, she had spent her entire life here. So many years had a reputation for doing that to convicts. They forgot what had gone on outside or what, if any humanity they'd had. No, she didn't know that her only son was a few floors away, that there was a rescue party intending to free all of the prisoners, and that that party was comprised of two of the most prominent members of her family - and if she had? There hardly would have been any reaction at all. She was sleeping.>

<Outside, Rowle kept an eye on the rest of the block. The three prison guards lying at various points along the floor had been dispatched quickly, and reinforcements had yet to arrive. The noise from outside came through much clearer here. Untelligible screaming with the occasional muffled explosion thrown in like punctuation marks, all of it background music to the task at hand.>

<Arkady knelt beside Delphine and reached to brush that wild hair aside. The years clearly had not been kind; he barely recognized her. The only glow around her now came from the fluorescent lights outside, the brilliant shine normally encompassing her having totally vanished. This more than anything else hurt a little. If he woke her up and she didn't recognize him, not even a little, then what? Bring her home, reintroduce her to her grown son and mindless, self-destructive, warped husband, maybe. Get the whole family together - grandchildren included - for a nice evening at home, around the fire. They could trade stories and see who could rattle off the most incoherent bit of nonsense.>

<Fingertips lit upon either temple, delicate and careful. He could do this in his sleep thanks to all that practice with Nicholas. What made it difficult was reaching beyond memories, past where he really wanted to look, to mentally nudge her towards waking.>

<The inside of a cell meant something a little different to Delphine than it did to most prisoners - though she wasn't particularly aware of it, those prisoners usually kept on struggling the entire time they were here. They'd fought against the Aurors upon arrest, they fought against the bars as soon as they were shut, and they fought to remember the glory days outside. Delphine was different because she let them take her away. There was little difference between here and home anymore, and even though she ran the risk of actually witnessing one of the memories permanently branded into whatever was left of her mind, it didn't matter. When something replayed over and over in her head, it didn't fade or become any less real the way it should have. Every time Delphine thought of the slick, sweaty thing her son and her husband made in their bed, she was always noticing new details.>

<In fact, that was usually how the time passed. She was just re-living the most damaging aspects of her life, watching them play out across the ceiling. Now that she was awake from the strange, different sleep she'd been sleeping, they clamored up again just behind her eyelids. The new memory started when she actually opened her eyes, dead auburn staring out first at Arkady's wrist, then Arkady's face.>

<It didn't occur to Delphine to talk, at first. This was just another thing to remember, something closer to the bearable side of what her life had been - for a second, Delphine saw Atienne in her head and thought of going back to sleep. If she craned her neck just a few inches to the left, though, there was a glimpse of the half open cell door. No hallucination, no fantasy ever had that door open - it protected her, blocked the outside world, kept her content inside the cell with her mass of memories and far away from the house in Chartres.>

<After as long in here without human contact, it was overwhelming to so much as think of another person within touching distance.>

Ark-

<And she hadn't used her voice in about as long. Delphine paused, coughed.>

Arkady.

<Many different forms of the French language made up daily vocabulary in the Sparrow household. This was because the various members enjoyed shouting obscenities in English, French, and a mixture of both. Once, Arkady swore he'd heard Gerrolt screaming Italian at his young protégé. Despite all this, not a word sank into that brain of his. Not beyond 'please' or 'thank you,' those basics taught in his etiquette classes. Now that this delicate little mother bird was awake, clearly focusing on him, he wished for those insignificant moments back, to learn and memorize all the pet names, the ways to show undying affection. But all that came to mind right now was the term for 'kitten', a name he'd never called her. That...almost fit right now, when three syllables brought a little ray of hope back to him.>

<Instead, he smiled, hands sliding around to Delphine's back to help her into a sitting position. The tiny scar cutting across his bottom lip became more noticeable then, stretched and a bit shiny.>

We're going to get you out of here. I need you to try to stand up though. I can carry you on the stairs.

<That whole speech about the Ministry falling and mass breakout? Later. After she got enough sleep in a real bed and ate properly. Later, after Arkady had had time to see how psychologically damaged the poor woman was now.>

<Delphine wasn't quite sure what she thought of all this just yet. Every cog and wheel in her mind was so stuck on reeling through the past that anything designed for the present - or an event of this magnitude, at least - was so covered in rust, she had to think of this as a new hallucination. Arkady was so real, though. The cold, papery feel of the skin at his wrist, the blue tracery of veins underneath, this was touch, real touch, and no memory of hers carried that kind of detail. Whatever was left inside of her couldn't stand including all five of her senses when she remembered.>

<Once again, Delphine turned to stare helplessly at the open cell door. Besides the dead tug of maternal instinct pawing up from the grave, she hadn't looked longingly at a way out of here in too long to recall. This explained the mechanical way she followed orders - standing, bracing against Arkady, Delphine willed her ankles and knees to move her up and not let go of him. It hadn't yet, but the gravity of this was going to hit her. Reality would, and the idea that her husband, her son, her daughter had still gone on living, that would creep up eventually and bat her from one side of sanity to the other.>

To where?

<But that was the only question she could get to for the moment.>

<An arm slid immediately around her waist, drawing hip against hip as he helped her to the doorway and through. The majority of Arkady's size was height alone - at 6'2", he was a head taller than Gerrolt, but so skinny that his body almost looked awkward nude. Delphine felt impossibly small against him, as if the years were working on grinding her down into nothing. Or maybe she had always been slight, and he never noticed. Now wasn't the time for that thought, anyway.>

<Rowle still stood watching the floor while occasionally nudging a dead guard with his boot. He took no notice of the pair until Arkady was halfway back to the staircase, and he had to jog to catch up.>

Go on down and pick him up. Take him back to Lebarone, drop him in a private room, then get back here. Make sure no one sees you.

<Off he went at pace surprisingly quick for a man his size. Arkady at least had that to be thankful for. Delphine didn't need to see Gerrolt, awake or not, right now. His presence would have to be enough. There was too much dangerous potential where Gerrolt was concerned, too much threat of flooding her with bad memories.>

<At the mouth of the staircase, Arkady stopped long enough to prop the door open.>

You're going to a house we've been using as a base. There isn't much left for you to go back to in France. I'll make sure you're safe, and that no one bothers you until I come back.

Ready?

<Oh, Arkady's presence was enough - enough to keep Delphine the tiny, bony, sharp-jointed birdlike thing she made in his arms from reverting into total chaos. It was much easier to sympathize with - teeth chattering, thin fingers working into Arkady's collar, the picture of well-worn harmlessness. She was frail, there, completely incapable of having murdered people right alongside a husband she'd been resenting ever since he put his hands on their little boy. Then again, resentment wasn't exactly the right word, but human language had yet to come up with something that described what it was Delphine thought of Gerrolt.>

<But Gerrolt wasn't in her head right now. The new scenery was, this escape was, and those were plenty.>

<When Arkady started talking again, he interrupted Delphine in the middle of mouthing something incoherent. It took her a minute to play back what he'd said, compile it, and try to formulate an answer. Oh, there wasn't much to go back to in France, but nobody would bother her. In her head, she imagined the old house demolished, a smoldering heap raped completely by the Ministry. Beds burned, wallpaper scorched..everything that happened there, annihilated in the fire set by an angry mob. The dry edges of Delphine's mouth twitched and pulled up, straining to make what could have been a smile - if you squinted.>

Ready.

<Never mind anyone try to fathom why she liked the idea of not being bothered so much.>

<An arm at her back, the other behind her knees, and up she went. The woman felt about the same weight as Nicholas at age five. But at least that made her remarkably easy to carry down several flights of stairs.>

<Once, when Arkady had to stop to readjust his hold, he'd spotted blood stains glowing up from one wall. Otherwise, they came across no one the rest of the way. When outside light flooded the stairwell, violet squinted, pained by the sudden jump to daylight from gloom. Rowle and Gerrolt were long gone, apparently - not even a bloody smudge on the wall to indicate the fallen leader had been sitting there.>

<Outside, Arkady eased Delphine back towards the ground, keeping a hand at her back to steady her.>

Good thing you're so light.

<That light hurt. This wasn't someone coming in partway through a good night's sleep and snapping on a light, this was the surface of the sun, a solar eclipse, total white. Delphine shut her eyes as hard as she could until tiny pinpoints of stars bled through the red trying to break into her eyelids. One gnarled, nail-bitten hand curled against the hard angles of her face and pushed while she hissed against it. There was a stumble, a couple of badly taken, blind steps, but eventually she managed to keep her footing and tried to focus on the yellow-green blades of grass blinking in and out of her vision.>

It's..

<Air. Clean, fresh, delicious air. Long enough in a certain environment, any foreign smells became neutral. Decades in a prison? The outdoors was a shock to the system, but it was so unbelievably dense and overwhelming that a part of her - a younger, more nature-loving part - drank it in with fervor. The natural light lit Delphine's dull irises, warmed them to something close to gold.>

..This is amazing.

<Immediately, she wanted to touch. Everything else went ignored for a second, just long enough for her to run a few fingers along the ground and giggle like a child. Still half squinting, she turned around and looked at what had become of Arkady.>

You aged.

<So had she, but mirrors weren't popular in Azkaban. It wasn't anywhere near an insult - a curious observation, maybe, something that flooded her with nostalgia and a strange, unfamiliar ache.>

<She was beautiful that way. Every inch of skin visible violet drank in, absorbed that glow around her that was only an effect of the light outside. With her back to him, Delphine's movements reflected those early years so long ago, when they were all naive and ridiculously in love with their lives. Beauty like this couldn't be recreated because of the purity, because it came directly from a soul starved for the world it was missing. Whether she knew it or not.>

<Then, she was turning back to him, once-pretty face transforming the moment into something...disappointing. He had wanted so much for her back then, when it was just Delphine and Gerrolt, the happy newlyweds. She was grace and perfection personified, so fucking intelligent and capable. But Gerrolt overlooked and overran all that and Arkady got to watch her slip beneath her husband's shadow, adapting to his expectations of her - that she stay quiet at his side, a loyal pet to be paraded around but never heard. And most importantly, to give him a son. She went down slowly, but Arkady never loved her any less.>

<The smile he adopted now reflected none of that old hurt, just general amusement at her observation.>

We can't all be perfect porcelain French dolls, dear.

Some of us are just lucky.

<Delphine sure was lucky with that mess of a family that chased away anything even resembling sanity in her. She had been pretty once, she remembered. It wasn't vanity on her part - more of a simple awareness, something that garnered a satisfied smile every time she saw Atienne. Even the thought of her daughter's name brought about pain, a mix between nostalgia and longing, the kind of thing that came from a mother's gut any time the female child passed through her mind. Out here, there would be more reminders. People passing in front of her window, maybe, two parents both holding the hands of their daughter. As for Nicholas, every day that he'd started to look less like her and more like her husband hollowed out the tiny parts of Delphine that clung to sanity. Past tense - those were all long gone, too weak to keep a hold.>

<She didn't want to leave. If she could have, Delphine would have wandered around the field the whole day, breathing in the smoky, meaty scent of a building burning down with lots of bodies inside. That, she remembered too.>

Do we have to go?

<Two mud-stained hands flattened out the front of her prison clothes, leaving prints that were too dark to show up against the dirty fabric. In the light, even she could see exactly how thin she'd become - the wrists were knobs, the fingers too long.>

<Forgive the bitter smile hearing that created. Lucky indeed: her steel and concrete walls protected her from the outside world, where a newly released husband blazed a path of destruction through the world responsible for his capture. She missed the years Atienne spent at school, embarrassed by even the mention of Nicholas' name. Why, she was here, eating something that never deserved the label 'food', while her son willingly submitted to rape and torture so violent that that leg of his still didn't work quite right.>

<Lucky thing. He'd been watching less than five feet away when that went down.>

Yes. There are plenty of safer places to play.

<She could play in and out of Lebarone's hallways for a few hours, maybe tire herself out and go curl up in a corner for a nap. At least that pack of wild animals wouldn't touch her. Out here, she was subject to any stray fire from either side. So Akardy held both hands out, palms up, and tried to really look friendly in hopes that the warmth of his smile might breach the cold in violet.>

<It didn't work too well, but the effort was there.>

<Somewhere in Delphine's head, a switch went off. Lights flickered and died, and regardless of the sunlight, she may as well have still been in that cell for how sallow and yellow her face suddenly looked - certainly not protected anymore, but still dying on the inside.>

I want to see Atienne.

<Demand, not request. Until he promised that she could, she would go right on wandering through that field pretending she was free.>

<That...was expected. But, as the blank, stupid look on his face suggested, she'd caught him off guard by asking so suddenly. Arkady didn't follow or even attempt to grab at her, instead carried on in that same careful, tired tone.>

You can see her after you get a shower and some nice clothes.

If you behave, I might even let you see Nicholas.

<If either child would even acknowledge her, anyway. Atienne, he believed would be much more receptive and perhaps happy to have mother back. Even if mommy was a little...different than before. She still wouldn't turn her away, not when so many years of her life had been spent virtually alone, with only that curse of a last name and an idiot brother to keep her company.>

<Nicholas, on the other hand...well. He'd been offered up to sweeten the bribe, but Arkady couldn't guarantee how warm and welcoming Nick would be. After all, Delphine had been the one to walk away the first time she happened on Gerrolt's little nighttime encounter with the boy. She'd shut the only door open to him and left him to depend solely on the father that hurt him. And then there was that whole hair-cutting thing...>

<But this could go well! Maybe even a welcome home party was in order. Get together the newly-released, still unbalanced mother bird, the sexual deviant, raging sociopath of a father, his lover of 20 years who also happened to be the girl-child's biological daddy, the junior-rapist son, and the half-brother fathered on some whirlwind of an affair, add to that the son's lover, then the father's current object of obsession and his psychotic wife, plus a touch of world-class French cuisine, and there you had it. The fucking apocalypse.>

<Her children. The ones that had fought their genes and didn't resemble either parent - the ones that had grown into sound, stable, admirable members of society and missed their mother for all of her efforts in saving them. Delphine's face relaxed, because it all sounded so wonderfully, unrealistically perfect. Weak-minded, lonely parents longing for even a glimpse of their offspring would always take the bait, so Delphine rubbed the last of the dirt off of her hands and walked right on into Arkady's arms. He wouldn't lie, he was trustworthy, and after a nice, long, peaceful sleep, she was going to get to see her children.>

Right after.
