<Here was the perfect opportunity yet again. The had the remainder trapped now, distracted, unable to both kill and save themselves from the trail blazing across the opposite side of the room. But the farther it travelled that way, the more it threatened to turn back on its creator. If Rowan couldn't properly control it...if he hadn't played with this sort of magic before..>

<Fucked.>

<Fucked twice - to do what he wanted, to prepare a fullforce killing curse, he would have to drop the ward. For the second it would take to destroy that big fucker directly across from him, Chance and Rowan would have to rely entirely on their own defenses. But they'd managed this far, hadn't they? And why did it matter at all what happened to either? They were just kids, useless little boys who without Gerrolt would not have been trapped here in the first place.>

<Whether it was hate or concern that changed his mind, Gerrolt would never know. He would strike all feeling from this event out of memory forever. Now, in the present, when his wand twitched just enough to refocus energy from ward to spell, they didn't matter. Just saving his own ass yet again.>

<When the taller figure glanced away towards the inferno beginning to close upon him, that wand flung out yet again.>

Avada kedavra.

<Compared to what Rowan had set upon them, that green light seemed pale.>

(( suck, sorry. ))

Gerrolt Sparrow - Death Eater

No explanation will matter after we begin
Unlock the dark destroyer that's buried within
My true vocation
And now my unfortunate friend
You will discover a war you're unable to win
I'll have you know that I've become indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side, a terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable

Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible master of war
My dedication to all that I've sworn to protect
I carry out my orders without a regret
A declaration embedded deep under my skin
A permanent reminder of how it began

((Going to do the Death Eater stuff in the first part of this post to keep it easy.))

<Livingston had gone into this with no fear and less doubt. A single Auror and the Sparrow wrapped up in a warded package. All perfect. But first Lafayette had appeared and then it had all begun to unravel, with alarming rapidness. He was still choking on the rage and indignation when the flames leapt through life. There was the briefest split second in which he just -gaped-. That spell, here and now? Even he had to move, to jump back once Lafayette's charm had been unraveled. His nearest compatriot did as well. Blurs of black as they weaved, dodged and attempted to marshall the flame. The flame which had enough to direction to circle and chase, to veer toward them. It was only his superior speed and skill that enabled Livingston to force the 'chimaera' aside and halt the lion, when the blur of green finally struck. The smoke and flaring flames had fooled him and Livingston was struck by a few, precious inches. The nearest black figure roared and pushed the body into the eager flames. His only through was to try and duck around the flames now, to save his 'brother' even as the fire arched higher. He managed to ward against the curse and something of flame, giving the scorched Death Eater a moment to unravel the charm.>

<Those on the ground had other worries. To dodge the eager flames with their own wounds and the curse and three wounded/stunned and the one dead were swept up in a blur. Shrieks rang out as the flames bit into them, sucking them into the greedy 'maws' as agonized shrieks and screams rang out. Rowan might be able to shape and guide the curse, but there was no holding it back. Not now and not here, when prey was within it's reach.>

<This was about the time that a shout in the distance. It was likely lost among the shrieks, but brought by flame, shouts and smoke, the Ministry employees tore down the opposite hall. The one that would lead them into thick of the battle and currently, the flames.>
_______________________

<The same feeling of disconnection was there, if stronger now. Of being here and watching from a safe, clinical distance, even if he could feel the rage boiling beneath. The calmer Rowan became, the more focused the flames were. Controlled was too strong a word, but they had a connection and a goal, even if it was an echo of unconcious desire of his. And a quiet, long buried part of Rowan -was- enjoying this. The chance to strike back just once. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.>

<In the end, it was the thought of Misery that brought him back. What she would expect, what she would desire and that he was not supposed to be like them. Why the fallen had even tried to scramble up escaped him, but the shrieks were telling. If he didn't stop it now, there would be nothing left of anyone and heaven help the members of the Ministry that would soon be arriving.>

<Rowan stepped forward, past the remains of the ward and past his two companions, just past the mouth of the hallway. Wand lifted, another inaudible phase muttered beneath his breath. There was a whoosh and a sudden blast of wind and heat as the flames ripped and then began to soar back into the wand.. and seemingly into Rowan. Fire blazed hot, lapping desperately at the floor and fighting against it's return even as it was pulled back into the vortex around the wand. The heat itself was nearly blinding, to say nothing of the furious flares of gold and yellow. The rivers became one shrinking one. A final furious burst and the echoes of a shriek as the last bites of it faded. Rowan was still there, still standing if gasping and bent with the effort. The robe was long since returned and smelt of ash and smoke, but the white skin bore no scar, no burn. Though that couldn't be said for the stone around him, scorch marks having melted streaks through the bare, unblemished rock.>

<It was only in the silence of the aftermath, that all those that still breathed could truly hear the shouts, voices and footsteps. Spells already being cast at the Death Eaters that had the misfortune to be visible.>

When I cried, when I shouted and I screamed and I yelled
And I was mad and I was angry
How come no one could tell?
Say why didnt you listen to me?
Was it really that hard to see?
Nobody listened.

<Even under pressure his first instinct was to escape. Now that the majority of his so-called compatriots had been neutralized, there were still Ministry officials to worry about.>

<Had he the energy, Gerrolt might have attempted another ward, just to shield himself from any Ministry member that tried to stun him. But after protecting Rowan and Chance then attempting to take down Livingston, barely enough energy remained to even move.>

I'd fucking run.

<This to Rowan, because he sure as hell was about to break away from this disaster. Rowan had insisted Chance set him free. They had both assisted in the capture and...well...release of a wanted felon. Beautiful, really. And out of the two of them, Chance looked the most incapable of removing himself from the situation.>

<Attempting to apparate from this point would only waste time. A security center had to be secured in as many ways as possible, but...employees still needed an employee entrance. An unprotected apparition point or a set of fireplaces connected to the Floo network...>

<Just by an Auror or two, right at the end of the hallway, another man spilled out of a green shadow. Perfect - they'd given him his escape route.>

<Chance didn't have the option to stay behind - when Gerrolt's hands seized the front of his shirt and lifted, the only place the boy had to go was into the Sparrow's broader side. Chance's arm draped across his shoulders, another hand about his waist, Gerrolt threw out the only spell he could manage - a temporary invisibility charm. As long as Chance remained connected to his side, it would cover the both of them.>

<That wasn't to say the men that had been regaining composure hadn't seen them. Spells ricocheted from the walls around them, splintering every surface struck. But with a Death Eater or two still living, serving as perfect distraction, the two still managed to that empty hearth.>

<Green flared, enveloping both and leaving the destroyed security center behind in a black blur.>

<And hunkered down in his little corner, arm sticking itself to his thigh with clotting blood, all Chance had been doing was watching and waiting for an opening, just one so that he could squirm out of this place. But that? The hand around his shirt? That was the last thing he'd expected, to be staring up at Gerrolt with his mouth half open and his facial features arranged in perfect, unbridled shock.>

<Just like that, he was nothing but a ragdoll. Sparrow Senior had a way of touching people, he thought, that made them feel that way - powerless, light, and easy to move or bend any which way. Chance didn't have a second to react before he was up against the bigger soldier and staring down with his head hanging, eyes transfixed on the floor. His stomach revolted and twisted in his torso, reacting badly to the illusion that his legs weren't there, but Chance managed. He kept it down and kept still, wrenching both eyes shut from the strain.>

<Rowan wasn't running, though he gave a nod Gerrolt may or may not have seen. It tempted for about a fraction of a second before reality set in. Of the two Ministry employees, someone needed to stay behind and answer questions, do reports and ensure that the incoming team didn't die of killing curses. With Chance vanishing, it was left to him. Perhaps he should have made a token outfit at stunning Gerrolt, but there were too small problems. One was that a Death Eater was lifting a wand at an arriving Auror, the second is that Gerrolt had vanished long before Rowan had time for a second stunning spell.>

<There was little also to do, but call to the Aurors and go about proving he was (mostly) in his right mind, before joining the others.>

<And he was late. He'd been held up and it might have cost the world a lot more than it should have.>

<There were three sharp cracks in the area around the security center, followed quickly by the sounds of screaming. There was a flash of white light and one of the hidden Death Eaters was sent flying out into the open, slamming against an opposite wall with a nasty cracking sound before he lay lifeless on the ground.>

<From nearby a black-robed figure emerged, wand held in the open, levitating an unconscious Death Eater. The new man in the black robes wore a white, expressionless mask as he held the Death Eater in the air. As Rowan was able to take this is, suddenly there was another masked figure in front of him, the white mask in place, except this one had his wand leveled at Rowan.>

<Another of the faceless emerged, flashing his wand in the direction of the Aurors to set up a barrier between the masked men and any spells that could be launched at them.>

<As this was going on, the man in front of Rowan spoke in a distorted, but vaguely familiar voice. It was as if he should be able to place it, but the recognition just wouldn't click together in his mind.>

Where is Gerrolt Sparrow?

<There was only a precious few seconds in which to make an assessment. Precious little to make it on as well. Rowan barely had time to absorb it was one Death Eater went flying and another soared into the air. The next thing that really set in was the wand pointed straight at his chest. Rowan was far too exhausted for fear and stared at the masked man for a moment. Then sore shoulders lifted in a shrug and Rowan lifted a hand (clearly -not- the one with a wand) and pointed sideways, towards the employee floo powder entrance.>

I'm rather sure he jumped in there, if sounds were anything to go by. Anything else?

Yes.

<It was a fitting response for the faceless, nameless individual in front of Rowan, lacking personality, individuality, existence. His wand arm never wavered as it aimed at Rowan, eyes staring determinedly.>

Like hell.

<Exhaustion kept it from being much more than a flare, but annoyance was there. Eyes narrowing to slits, even as Brian's mind knocked against his. The response was instinctive and came without thought. The first thing Brian saw would be the cliffs of a beach with the furious wash of waves against the shore, the sound echoing through Rowan's mind even with the tug and pull. Blue eyes held the masked one's gaze, Rowan doing a quick calculation.>

<The flood of images came slowly at first, with a deliberateness that revealed more than a little skill in Occulmency. The chaos at the Leaky Cauldron with the agonized screams and death after death. The ropes curling around him and Gerrolt's grip. Falling into half seen room and the barest glimpses of a tustle that was mostly a blur, until the point where Gerrolt fell and Rowan scrambling to his feet.>

<Next there was the hospital and a blur of white clad figures and walls. Gerrolt was strapped to a bed and there were faceless doctors and nurses swimming out of view. The small room and then Rowan leaving it with some urgency, glancing quickly over his shoulder. Chance rejoining them and the trip down to the elevator. There was the 'Ministry' worker attempting the imperius, only to get slammed with it himself. The fight of eight against two, where Gerrolt had broken free (The particular moment of Rowan giving the order and Chance obeying it absent) and a blur of spell, curses and charms. A burst of flames and then the quiet. Rowan against the few remaining Death Eaters, while Gerrolt vanished even as the Ministry appeared, Chance with him. Too many opponents to strike it and Gerrolt was far, far too fast. The first glimpse of the Ministry and then the white masked figures.>

<There was the definite desire to stun or at least punch the man in front of him, but the desire never became a thought or true plan. Rowan's wand didn't lift and he continued to stare back into the mask face. For one, he wasn't sure he could summon the energy and two, he was rather outnumbered. The exhausation and the desire to speed this up were the only reasons he'd given that much and now, as he felt the tug back into deeper, less chartered waters, he froze. There was another look and Rowan attempted to tug them both down. Into one of the endless afternoons of that lifeless, dusty house and the barreness that seemed to seep out of memory and down to the bone.>

<Brian could sense the gaps, the stuttering of the memories that Rowan was giving him. His skill at Occlumency was apparent. He didn't know a lot of wizards that could augment their memories in that kind of fashion on short notice. Brute force wasn't going to work on Rowan, but, in all honesty, he hadn't really expected it to.>

<He felt himself being tugged down into a memory that Rowan was comfortable with and Brian let himself be led. He knew it was a trap, a way to keep him from having access to other memories, but it wouldn't hold him when he was prepared. He knew things about Rowan that would give him an advantage, things he knew were there and wouldn't have to dig to find.>

<As soon as he felt himself being trapped inside the memory of the house, Brian lashed out. He tore through the wall and found Rowan becoming a girl, the confusion and hysteria it invoked. He started to pull along that line, seeing Rowan leaving school, but for what reason? As Rowan's mind moved in to defend he dropped the line and darted to the next memory before he got caught again, his mind attempting to out pace Rowan's.>

<There was Chance's face at school and Faye's and memories of a Yule Ball, everyone standing along the lines and drinking butterbeer. The memory zoomed in on Rowan laughing...>

<And then it was on to the next, Brian letting Rowan's occlumency attempt to defend and attacking a spot it left open. There was pain here, violation and humiliation. A guarded memory and even though Brian didn't know the details there was a brief flash of sympathy within himself, but this was a good spot to work on. He knew Rowan would defend it, who wouldn't? He pushed on this door, attempting to get in for a few seconds, letting Rowan put up his defenses and get them prepared.>

<And that was what he needed. His mind flashed like a great cat striking out, pouncing on its real prey. Using Rowan's exhaustion against him he hammered like a wreaking ball at Rowan's current memories, slamming through defenses with a deft thought. There was Rowan releasing Gerrolt, giving him his wand. There were most of the memories Rowan had attempted to hide, pulling into Rowan's thoughts.>

<It was a form of attacking Occlumency that the Nameless had practiced, stuttering the defenses, feinting until the right target was open. It required skill and precision, but sometimes was still rejected by a skilled Occlumens. Brian was sure he wouldn't have gotten this far without a long process unless Rowan had been exhausted as he was.>

<But it was apparent to both of them that the masked figure knew now what had occured. He kept his wand leveled at Rowan, silent for the moment as if judging him, eyes focused on his as he dropped the mental attack.>

<Comfortable was a slight exaggeration, but it was a lesser evil. A lesser evil than revealing even a hint of Order secrets, of letting the stranger see Fiendfyre and mistaking him for a dark wizard and a half dozen other things. The memory of becoming a girl was rather easy and quite painless at first. Rowan had helped out a klutzy Huffflepuff in class and been forced to test their potion as punishment. The sex change had been the ressult. Rather embarassing, but he'd stood up to Snape. Humilation didn't start up until the wedding party, where betrayal, alarm and fury had swept over him in waves. Something more there, a dark, little secret that Rowan violently resisted being pried loose. As he pulled at the ages of the memories of leaving, one thing would flash into his mind before he jumped on: the Dark Mark standing out starkly from pale skin, an arm that couldn't be the female Rowan's. No more time than to just glimpse the horror and it was gone.>

<Rowan defended of course, having no desire for this mask stranger to rip open various secret wounds or memories that he had long since attempted to bury. The strategy the masked man was going for wasn't exactly lost on Rowan, but Rowan was hardly himself just now. His defenses were stretched thin, especially as he tried to be in two places at once. Both there and beyond, wherever beyond would turn out to be.>

<The repeated slams met with some success. Some bits and pieces slid out of Brian's reach, but the one he'd thought and struggled about most remained. Gerrolt deserved to die, a few dozen times over. Did that give Rowan the right to stand by while he died like a dog? Should it matter? There were glimpes of more practical thoughts too. In all likelihood, they were -all- going to die. If death didn't take Gerrolt, the wards wouldn't last under the volley of curses that were being fired. There was also more than a slight suspicion that Chance would free him soon enough. In the end, Rowan had given the order and returned the wand as the battle was enjoined. There was no flinching no, no hint of a cower or wavering as Rowan stared steadily back at Brian.>

I'm not a murderer, even of convicts. Judge me for that as you will.

<And a slight shrug and Rowan waited. Waited to either be blasted or for the man to lower his wand.>

When I cried, when I shouted and I screamed and I yelled
And I was mad and I was angry
How come no one could tell?
Say why didnt you listen to me?
Was it really that hard to see?
Nobody listened.

<Brian was silent for a long series of seconds that seemed to drag on, momentously slow as if time hung still. Meanwhile the last Aurors were blasting at the defense set up between them and the masked men. There was a grunt from the man keeping the spell up, showing some strain as the Aurors began to weaken the wall.>

<Brian didn't seem to notice all his attention on Rowan at the moment. There was no emotion shown, no shrug of the shoulders or sign of dismissal. Instead there was only that voice that sounded so familiar yet so different from behind the mask.>

You are not a murderer unless he kills. It is advisable that you uncover what Gerrolt Sparrow knows and kill him before those deaths do haunt you, or before he does the same to you.

"Atropos!"

<It was a quick shout from the man holding up the wall and the other masked man looked to Brian whom the first had been addressing and he spoke, all of them bearing the same monotone, eerie voice, but neither having the familiarity for Rowan as the man before him did.>

"They're starting to breach Clotho's barrier. Cut the thread or let it ride, Atropos."

<Brian watched Rowan for a few more seconds before he gave him a nod. He nodded again, never looking back, and three seconds later all three of the Nameless Disapparated simultaneously with echoing cracks, the Death Eater they had been levitating disappearing with them.>
