I'll take you if they don't allow you for the weekend with all the other students.

<Rapid fire, those neon-lit eyes across the screen - this meant that his answer was default, and instead of carefully planning the concept of escorting a female through the Scottish village itself, Aidan had simply offered it as a kind solution to the fact that she'd never even laid eyes on it. A moment later, however, this mild slip occured to him, and all he did about it was .. blink, several times in quick succession.>

Perhaps you should write a copy yourself, if that's the case. It would shed light on the more disputed points of everything that happened.

<A few flickers of eyelashes subsided, staring at the boy with an almost shocked face. Wrist rested lightly, her hand at a standpoint while fingers warily busied in her palm. As she had a habit of using her thumb the most, it rocked against an amethyst embellished ring. It slid to and fro, until she stopped her silent pondering.>

That'd be nice, I'm sure..But I actually am able to go to the villa, provided I don't have.. other important matters. You can still take me aside from then, though, if you please.

<A gentle shrug set her back on track with the book, stroking back her cheek.>

Another copy, not so..It would takes years, and I'm too busy for a biography. The only points he missed are the ones that would further ignite the hatred for the Irish clan. He actually almost made the details child-friendly. Not that it is anywhere near suitable.

<She knew first-hand the way they slowly tortured the male or female, supernatural or not. Even if their main targets were Witches and Wizards, mostly pure-blooded, as awkward as it seemed. Lyneth had no wish, or motivation to have all the details in writing that would end up forever in the hands of some interested soul.>

It's your choice.

<This was obscene. He felt like a first year in front of some overdeveloped thirteen year old just because it was tricky to figure out how to reply at all; Aidan was eighteen years old, well established, independent, with his own so-called business, and he was honestly unaware of how to communicate? It must have been over Theophile and Terry, because first year, when he'd interlaced hands with Cignus Niger and carried on a five year relationship with her, there wasn't the least amount of hesitancy - not that Aidan saw this girl in the same light.>

I didn't mean now. When you retire or have a substantial amount of time off; most books aren't completed in one quick go, either.

<It was his turn to shrug, fingers pulling weakly at the handle of a brass drawer lip; inside was another of his books he had yet to finish, and seeing as third hour was in, the flood of bookworm students that populated this place during lunchtime wasn't due for another hour.>

<Curiousity was something that most teenagers harbored, proving even more true as she leaned in to hopefully catch a glimpse at the current or pending compilations of works. My choice, huh? Shouldn't have offered! Redirected, she jotted a few notes on her arm, the quill now in her hand seeming to have popped from no where.>

I'd rather write fiction, sadly. But, I won't be retired for a while. I'm under contract until death, or all requirements are fullfilled. It's my punishment, you could say.

<At that, Lyneth gave a smirk, upending her wrist to examine the dull bracelet about it.>

How unfortunate.

<Had he heard her line of thought, Aidan's tanned, freckled shoulders would've merely shrugged against their black cotton encasement and painted him all over with indifference. Those sleepy green eyes were good for that, indifference - he could feign perfect nonchalance in the face of quizzes and Slytherin bullies all the same. The latter, of course, Aidan no longer had to worry about. He let out a lazy sigh and went about re-arranging half the volumes on the computer, all of which had been misplaced because of four hands, two belonging to a pair of little girls each, that had run across the keyboard. His sisters had never seen one of those.>

Judging by your attitude, though,

<Damn them all, he couldn't even find Magical Maladies and Cursed Contraptions.>

you'll find a way to wriggle out of it. It's a wonder how you got into Gryffindor with a Slytherin's thought process. I wonder how your peers will take that.

<Like xenophobes, he imagined.>

.. Mm. It's default.

<Wrist rose slightly, peering at the old fashioned gold watch, parallel to that condemned jewelry. A sigh left her lips, closing the autobiography.>

I have a few materials to grab from Snape.. I'll be in here again, afterwards, though. Report for .. uh.. tell you later.

You know, if you have some free time. I wouldn't mind a visit while I scribble aimlessly about potions.

<A soft eye winked, and she left the Library to catch her schedule by the toe.>

<As difficult as it may have been for a number of regular students to see, a thick book was toppling atop the grandeur of the Muggle Literature section. It heaved and hoed awkwardly along its spine as it seemed to almost be trying to decide whether it was lowly enough to be placed in such commonly confines. The sleek cover was delicately carved oak, enchanted to shine with varnish and intricate to bedazzle the eye. It was simply a work of mastery that read, The McKinlochs, a remastered history of wizard killers.>

<Aidan's fingerprints were on every single book in the library, and it wouldn't have been an overstatement to say he was familiar with at least seventy five percent of every piece of written material inside - but today, plucking the one book that happened to be out of place from where it was leaning, he couldn't help opening it.>

<A note was plastered between the hard cover and the title page; it was just as flashy as the book itself, an old pressed lily that had since turned translucent with careful inking marked across the petals. ``Aidan, though it might have taken years for me to promote this title, I figured you might appreciate it sooner. ~Lyneth``>

<She, however, had not expected the Wizard to be in the Library so late in the night. It was curious, how she had come to be within the school. Apparently leaving would be more difficult. Lyneth stepped out from a chair she'd sat herself in and beamed at Aidan.>

<Most people who happened to be all alone at night in the middle of a dark library with nothing but a shitty, old school lantern to read by would have thrown up their internal organs at hearing a voice. As it was, Lyneth caught Aidan squinting at the tiny letters he'd plucked out of the inside cover, twisting the thing by its stem so gently that it couldn't have broken - he was careful by nature, soft-handed and soft-spoken in a way that gave the other larger personalities around him an opportunity to steal the spotlight. Lyneth was one of those larger personalities. From what he remembered, she was subtle and insisted on filling the role of a normal student. You couldn't fit a square peg into a circular hole, though, and that made up the majority of his impression of her.>

<Slowly, almost as though he wanted to re-read that note one more time before replying to her, Aidan turned to look calmly over his shoulder.>

You're trying to make an impression on me. Tell me what you wanted to say.

<She was. It was past curfew, the library was locked up, and she'd given herself away by getting in so quietly. This library was Aidan's personal space - it was him. If he were a woman, the library would have been his vagina. And here, to have somebody barging in without his permission made him feel so beyond violated that Mr. Brick Wall himself couldn't help frowning ever so slightly.>

"I have nothing to say, Aidan. I don't have many chances to come to this library-- I merely was dropping by my gift. A token, a memento, a statement."

<Her feet moved like waves along a tired beach, sluggish yet still unrelenting in its wake while skimming the surface. Lyneth stood close to him with her omnipotent grin until her hand could rest at her masterpiece's spine. This was not the time for her to realize that she'd made her acquaintance uncomfortable, and if it was to add to his collection, surely he must have understood. She was no student, and obviously cared enough to place this impression that she'd risk alarming an entire school of magical beings.>

"Oh, unless, we're still due for that trip to Hogsmeade."

You know where I work.

<Aidan's anti-bullshit aura was about as obvious as anybody's. He had the glower of a drug dealer and the stance of somebody completely sure of his place in the world - since this library was his stomping ground, he had no trouble walking himself around Lyneth, step by slow step, and looking her up and down as though she'd just walked into his very own locked apartment.>

You're the second person in as many days that I haven't seen in years. I don't think anything in life is a coincidence - least of all this. There's always the mail, there are owls, there are people who deliver packages, but you chose to walk into a school more heavily guarded than Azkaban was to give me something as trivial as a note. As far as I can remember, we already went to Hogsmeade, so I'll ask you again: what do you want?

"..."

<Her smile dropped plainly, eyes following Aidan as he paced around Lyneth. She had really not come for any ulterior motive, simply to give him the book she'd written. Pulsating questions ran through her mind as she stood there with her expressionless stare, mind wheeling around each possible answer she could give to both him and herself. >

<Teeth gripped at the back of her oral cavity, and a palm raised awkwardly to her head as it lowered closer into her chest. It was a quick moment where the pain and voices ruled all else and it took strength to muffle a growl in the pit of her throat. She could only choke out her plagiarized reason after the suffocation of thought had ceased.>

"I need some books-- I'd take them, but I'd hate to make you worry. And that note will be worth a lot one day, Aidan. My book, and handwriting."

<Books. This girl..needed books, and her logical destination to get those books was the one controversial stronghold buried underneath ward after ward to protect the children inside from the war outside. Aidan's big hazel eyes blinked twice, slowly, while his mouth hung open in his best impression of surprise. Lately, he hadn't been the most expressive person to be around.>

I don't know how to regulate this. I can't check them out under your student number, I don't know whether or not to let you in the restricted section since you've already broken in, and I'm not sure whether to ask you to pay for them or simply bring them back. This is bizarre, even for you.

I suppose we'll start with what you're looking for.

<It may have been a bit late, Varian thought, to go retrieving books from the library - too late, perhaps. He had barely thought it necessary to get dressed up just to leave the Ravenclaw common room for a few minutes, maybe longer, and thusly his appearance leaned more toward androgynous than effeminate.>

<On his way, he had begun to doubt that it would even be open to students, as it was past curfew, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was unlocked. The question of why didn't occur to him until he was inside of the nearly-empty, and quite dark, library, whose only signs of life were the glow of a lantern and distinct voices. One of them had to be able to help him, he deduced, and approached. He had few qualms with barging into someone else's conversation.>

Excuse me - can either of you help me find.. <He recognized the girl from Ancient Runes, and raised a curious eyebrow at her.> .. some things? I have a pass. <It was tacked onto his request as an afterthought, and he struggled to pull the piece of paper out of his pants' pocket to hold it up for them to see. Briefly, he wondered whether or not the pass mattered.>

Have I interrupted something?

<Just then, another student had moseyed in. Lyneth lowered her head, gazing at both Aidan and Varian while she silently processed her next move.>

" I couldn't imagine what there could be to interrupt. What is it you are in search of?"

. . . .

<This was not a free for all. His library was not a circus, there were no elephants or trapeze artists here. Varian got the thin slice of Aidan's face edged over one shoulder, what was visible past the thick black mess his hair tended to make once that typical braid of his came out for the evening.>

No. You haven't interrupted anything. Let me guess - you must be a Ravenclaw. Absolutely. Snape would throw anybody who knocked on his office door out, Kitulla goes to sleep at seven, professor Locke would be polite, but ask you to borrow from another student, and professor Murray...he's got so much faith in the pride of learning, he'd write you a pass and tell you to come right in here looking for whatever you needed.

<Judging by the way his face crumpled into a disapproving, pathetic looking frown, Aidan didn't agree with Ian Murray's response to curious students. This, however, was directed more towards Lyneth.>

You are not the librarian. I am the librarian. You may come with us while we look for whatever book..Varian, right? <Right. Aidan knew every student by face and number, but very few stood out as much as an albino, genderless Ravenclaw.> Whichever book Varian needs in the middle of the night.

<What he'd said was stupid for two reasons: One, the Slytherin Dormitories, even back in Aidan's day, were not conducive to the small population of study-nerds trying to squint at tiny book lettering and follow along over the bumps and moans from the floor above. The common room had teenagers in their rebellion phase filtering in and out all hours of the night, either drunk or tripping on acid, making stupid comments at the portraits or climbing on the furniture. Pince let Aidan in past eleven whenever he needed to escape into a potions manual or an extra special charms book, therefore, he had absolutely no right not to let these people do the exact same thing - of course, Ravenclaw's percentage of bookworms was probably significantly higher than its percentage of screamers.>

Just try not to be too helpful. If you see what you were looking for along the way, by all means, take it and leave.

Yes - Ravenclaw. Professor Murray was very generous.

<He was delighted - and perhaps overexcited, as he tended to be - that he had not been sent immediately out of the library for coming so late.>

I would have waited until a more decent hour to come if it hadn't been very necessary. <That was a bit of a stretch. More reading material wasn't necessary at all - unless one happened to be a Ravenclaw. Not following the rules, however, was something that could only be chalked up to the "I'm new" excuse for so long. They were supposed to clever, Ravenclaws were, and Varian was still finding it miraculous that he'd only gotten lost twice on his way to the library.>

I mostly need Misuse Of Muggle Artifacts, I'm really sorry to be troubling you at this time of night - ... did either of you happen to mention your name? <How rude, he thought - the librarian seemed to know well enough who Varian was, and the albino hadn't the slightest idea who either of these people were. Then again, he didn't know very many people at Hogwarts.> I apologize if I should know you, at least, Mister Librarian, but I transferred here from Beauxbatons only recently. And you, <he addressed the woman,> I remember you from the Ancient Runes classroom.

< Shifting awkwardly now, a sneer had been shot underneath the gloom towards Aidan. Snatching up the gift she had so generously offered him prior, Lyneth turned now to the pallid fleshed boy that now was in need of an extra book for class. Dark hair fell across her cheeks as she tossed her head back lightly to give the top shelf a thorough, but short, investigation before answering Varian.>

" Yeah, Jolon is my brother. I'm Lyneth."

<She'd cast the other male's words straight out of her inner ear and back out into the deep shade of black that seemed only to echo Aidan's words back to the three of them. As if he could be more callous or blunt.>

"We won't be passing any of my choices, as we're already in the Muggle section. But thanks for your permission."

Taking it slow
Saving up, she-
Before she knows it, all I ask before she goes home
She's tired of crying,
And sick of his lies
She's suffered him for far too many years of her life.
Feeling lone and
Scared that he'll say,
Do you know how
Over time, you drove her away?
I'm savin' up for
The day when she goes
The day that she stands up
For everything that she chose.

My name is Aidan.

<Polite niceties were common among the better educated crowd, but Aidan was quietly delighted nevertheless. Nobody ever asked his name. Conversations with students usually went with a request for their number and a reminder that their book was due back insert date here, and it never had anything to do with the weather, how anybody was feeling, or what anyone's name might have been. With his back turned to Varian, Aidan was absolutely free to raise his eyebrows and half-smile - the only person who could have seen it was Lyneth, and she was a little busy being short and..well, herself, wasn't she?>

Calm down. We'll get to what you want. I'll serve the actual student, and then voila, library's all yours again. Misuse..do you happen to know who the author is?

<Crouched down on his haunches in front of a big sign that read Muggle Literature with a finger gliding across several spines, Aidan stopped and looked up at the Beauxbatons transfer.>

<Varian smiled briefly back at the librarian and glanced at his pass, where he had scribbled his list of books... most of them without the authors' names. Brilliant. He pursed his lips in deep concentration and crumpled his parchment absently in his hand - maybe if he stood there long enough looking pretty and pretending that he knew anything about the author's name, the book would turn up. As a matter of fact, the rest of the list was almost entirely illegible script, as he had smeared the ink, and now he had crushed the paper into an awful mess.>

Where are my manners? First I come to bother you in the dead of night, and now I expect to be assisted immediately - you should be helping the lady first, n'est-ce pas? I'm sure her needs are far more important than my homework, and she was here before I was. Unless, of course, you'd like me out of here.

"Oh, no, it's fine. THough I'm charmed to meet someone with such good upbringing. Not enough people have manners these days."

<Lyneth had seen the small glee in Aidan's face but quickly took to laying her eyes upon Varian. ..

(Too tired, finish later. ~_~)

As far as I'm concerned, if you have a pass and a reason to be here, your manners aren't any concern of mine.

<But such nice, pleasant manners made Aidan feel bad - if he had any idea what that was like anymore - for sounding the way a cold shower felt.>

..But I appreciate it. If you like Lyneth enough, we could always hold etiquette meetings in here after hours. I'm sure they'd benefit her.

<Speaking of cold showers, that was icy pimp-librarian-ese for joke. Ha, ha.>

<That didn't stop him from casually reaching over and pinching Lyneth's cheek mid-book search, though.>

So, you don't know the author's name? I haven't seen it yet. Either you got the wrong book, or somebody's checked it out - I could always tell you who, once I get to the computer, but I'm fairly sure Braden Abendroth has it. He's a Ravenclaw, I'm sure you know him. He probably wouldn't mind sharing, since he's never struck me as rude.

Of course.

<Although slightly uncomfortable with the idea of studying with someone of whom he knew very little about, he crumpled his pass up and slipped it into his pocket, nodding curtly at the librarian and the lady.>

Thank you for the help you offered, though - you'll probably be seeing me around here quite often.

<With that, he found his way to the door and prepared to wander through the maze of hallways back to the Ravenclaw dormitories.>
