I never said she was ugly, but I might have a different definition of "attractive."

<Caleb smirked slightly as he smacked the biscuit away, letting it shatter into smaller pieces onto the table. Idly the prefect began to to sweep them into a pile with his hand as he spoke.>

She may be physically... maintained, but if you know her and know what kind of personality hides behind all that work she does for her outside, then you can't find her attractive. Her... evilness just shines through. Or... darkens through. I'm not sure how to say it.

<He paused for a second and shrugged, picking up a piece of bacon and chewing.>

But, then, you were never that intelligent so I don't expect you to understand.

Mine was physically attractive. Physically. Her personality..that..isn't something I'm discussing with you. I know her.

<A copy of the Daily Prophet straightened out all businesslike, just so that Avery could look at something besides Caleb while he finished up the Mila discussion.>

We dated for a little while. Before Lucas. But, but, even my..friendship with you has, so far, been better than my dating experience with her. Bad move on my part. And stop calling me stupid, you dick.

<Insert playful nudge.>

<So, Caleb had been entirely teasing for the most part. He hadn't thought that this conversation was going to steer in the direction it did until, bam, they were there. Caleb's jaw dropped just a bit, but whatever emotion wasn't expressed in his mouth showed up in his eyes. It was impossible to miss that widening of shock, the expression that conveyed just how startled and disturbed by this information he was. He couldn't imagine Avery dating Mila. Well, he hadn't known the Ravenclaw very long, but it was always horrible to hear that your archnemesis had struck your pot of gold first.>

<He collected himself after a few seconds... or more honestly he tried. He chewed once, swallowed hard and then raised an eyebrow at Avery.>

... Really?

<His eyes drifted from Avery over to where Mila most likely was at the Gryffindor table, and then back to Avery.>

... Ew.

<Once the initial horror had set in, Caleb was able to stop using one-word statements and instead gave a small smile, somewhere between teasing and serious.>

I don't know if I can stop calling you stupid if you keep giving me evidence that you are. Or were. Um, both.

You can't - <Pause, here, while Avery helped himself to the same plate of bacon Caleb was fishing out of.> - you can't judge me for that. I was younger. Our parents set me up on a blind date. Mine told me they wanted me to find a nice girl, somebody to keep me from doing nothing but reading books. Sometimes I think I got set up with the wrong group of foster parents.

<They meant well, his plump, sweet-faced mother and his stern pipe-smoking father. Each fit the other like an old glove, sitting around the table in the morning with their buttery, fried breakfasts and their spread out newspaper. Analina and Thomas. Those two took him in at the tender age of four or five, always asking him if he needed more food, the bony little thing, always knitting him clothes and putting pence in the swear jar. Avery loved them the way a person could love grandparents or relatives they'd gone to stay with over the summer, but he never once saw them as real parents. On the train to Hogwarts, they caught sight of Mila, threw a rose in his hand, and shoved him at her.>

<Neither of them approved of Lucas, safe to say. They were old fashioned. Kind, but close-minded and set in their ways.>

Are you saying I'm stupid for liking you? For caring a lot about the terrible impression I'm making? I could shut up. I could say I was just using her or something, but for some reason, I want you to know all of this shit and..accept me regardless.

<For some reason, that struck a little closer to Avery's heart than he wanted it to. Back to the newspaper then, so that he could ignore Caleb's face for the second time.>

<This was one of those times when Avery caught him completely off guard. Well, maybe not completely, but he never expected these things to come out of Avery's mouth. The food was forgotten, Caleb lowering the bacon he had in his hand back to the table as his full attention came to rest on Avery. It also one of those dumb times when he was caught by just how... stupidly attractive Avery could be. It was that whole thing that was ruining the "Let's just be friends," clause that Avery and he had... or did have? Or maybe hadn't had but had pretended to? Or maybe just Caleb thought it was there because of Kingston and their history in the past and had never been an unspoken rule but something that kept Caleb comfortable with spending time around Avery. Now, however, it seemed to be crumbling apart.>

You're not.

<He frowned as he reached over, finally pulling the paper away from Avery and setting it beside his breakfast on the table. Caleb's face was stuck in a frown, more disappointed at himself than Avery for chiding him on to the point where Avery had felt bad.>

Not stupid, that is. And... well, I like you, too, Avery. And I want you to tell me this stuff. I just act like that... I don't know.

<He grinned after a second, small but still there.>

Maybe I'm the stupid one. But you can never tell anyone or I'll deny having ever said it.

Let's be honest here for a second - you like me. I believe you. You've made that obvious, by accepting my dates and hanging around me, but what's between you and Kingston?

<Ignore the plates, cups, beverages, idle chatter and breakfast surrounding them. The entire great hall could have been dark except for that one burning, obvious person staring intensely out from his side of the bench at Caleb - and you'd think Avery wanted to be a legilimens right then and there the way he locked eyes with the boy across from him, serious and probing and praying he got a straight answer. There was no denying the two of them had chemistry, but if you factored in his own questionable attraction to Kingston? The mess that Mila made and what Caleb acted like around the older, more masculine boy suddenly complicated what had an been innocent couple of dates in Hogsmeade.>

Don't sit there and stutter, either. Don't be afraid of hurting my feelings. I'm just not the kind of person who likes to waste his time playing games, Caleb.

<It was a cute joke, that 'You'd better not tell anybody,' but Avery didn't so much as crack a smile.>

<And this was that conversation that he'd been dreading. It wasn't that he didn't know the answer. It'd been bothering the Gryffindor for a while. He had a lot of solitude studying time, and more often than not recently, much to his frustration, he'd found his mind wandering to his current situation. And really how much of a jerk it seemed he'd become.>

<He'd seen Kingston's true self, been to his home and saw how things went there. Kingston was brash, solid and comforting. Oh, and hot. Kingston was everything he wasn't and it excited Caleb like few things did.>

<However, Avery was, well, almost everything Caleb was. He could admit to himself, but no one else, that he might have followed Avery just a little bit at times, watching what the Ravenclaw did. It had started when the whole Lucas thing went down. Caleb had imagined himself the vigilante, the one hunting down the boyfriend-beater and bringing him to some kind of justice. But then the following happened even after that. Whenever Avery was caught up in some kind of book Caleb could feel that thrill rise his chest of a shared interest. So what if that interest was being a nerd? It was something that he couldn't really share with Kingston and he'd found himself drawn to Avery.>

<Then, last night when Avery was drunk... well, Caleb had been able to disguise the desire to touch the Ravenclaw under the impression that he was helping. Okay, Caleb wasn't evil, he really did want to help. But he couldn't honestly say that it been entirely without benefit to himself. If he concentrated he could still feel Avery's back under his fingers and the warmth that radiated from it.>

<And now... Avery was asking him exactly what he wasn't sure about. Where did this leave him with Kingston?>

Avery...

<The grin fell off of Caleb's face, teeth rising to his lip. He looked to the table, trying to find some kind of answer in the scattered breakfast food. When that didn't come his face turned back to Avery. His features were soft, but sincere, something matched in his tone of voice.>

It's different, you know, with Kingston. I mean, I don't think we're anything really official or anything and I really like Kingston. I just...

<He sighed and reached up to run his a hand through his hair, which of course left a few pieces completely out of place when his hand dropped to his lap again.>

You're someone that I relate to, Avery. I thought that I was, you know, all infatuated with Kingston and that was great. And then...

<This was difficult. How could he say this without sounding like the confused, self-centered brat that he most likely was? Or how he felt he was. He sighed, tongue flicking out over his lips, all these nervous habits appearing to show exactly how apprehensive how was about this whole thing. He really hadn't been expecting to be overly honest today. If he'd time to prepare, maybe to study or figure out how this whole social thing worked. There was probably some book in the library somewhere that would tell him exactly how to handle this situation. But he hadn't have that book that, now that he thought about it, probably didn't exist and he was having to wing it.>

<His eyes traveled to the side another second, and then back to Avery's face, his heart picking up its pace in his chest.>

Last night I'd rather have left with you. When I'm in my bed at night hugging my pillow it's you more often than not. I... I'm not good at this.

<And that whole hugging the pillow thing? His cheek's flushed and he smiled very nervously. That had been too much information, really, and not something he'd planned on revealing.>

You should have.

<Left with him, he meant. Sure, it would have been embarrassing and awkward, but wouldn't they get more out of that kind of naked honesty in the end? When people dated, they tended to project an edited version of themselves - they didn't indulge all those horrible little habits that made them them; there was no burping, no farting, no rude comments. In the end, a relationship needed to incorporate the true selves of both participants to work, and that was what Caleb had seen at that party. Avery's jealousy, even as subdued as it was, leapt out at Kingston and his locker room comments. He'd leaned into Caleb's touch and taken comfort in it, forgetting about every single other party-goer there had been. Ask him, Avery never would have been able to make a comprehensive list of people around that night. The whole thing would have a single name on it - Caleb Gentry, because he was the only one that mattered. And had he thought about that same prefect escorting him upstairs and tucking him into bed? Of course. Now that Caleb existed, nothing seemed...complete without him.>

I don't want to get between you and another person. You had a thing for Kingston before I ever showed up - or, rather, before you ever started interrogating me about punching Lucas. I've always liked that spark you have. Even when you were sitting there trying to tell me off, that...passion, I guess I'd call it, that passion...I like it.

<Avery sighed, pinching his eyes shut for a moment.>

What does any of this shit mean, anyway? We like each other. Are we..supposed to be official now? Where we don't see other people?

<"You should have." That was a loaded statement for Caleb because it meant his mind drifted to what might have happened. He could see himself, smiling, as he led the drunk Avery up to his room. How did Avery sleep? Did he wear pajamas, boxers, naked? That was enough to put a slight flush on his cheekbones, imaging Avery nude, climbing into bed. And what would have happened? Avery being that drunk, what would he had tried? but, this was a retarded line of thinking, one that would only end with a red-faced prefect.>

<Then the subject of Kingston was brought back up and Caleb's happier thoughts were brushed away. Not that Kingston didn't make him happy, but what he was doing, what he'd done... the thought of Kingston brought on a lot of guilt at the moment.>

I think it's kind of late to get in the way of whatever. I mean... look at us, right?

<And then there was those questions that required utter honesty and decision-making on Caleb's part. He'd just come over for breakfast and now this! His tongue darted out across his lips once more as he looked back to Avery.>

Is that what you want? Do you want like... an official kind of thing?

<It wasn't stated in a way that made it seem like Caleb would mind, more testing Avery since he seemed... reluctant, or confused.>

<Concentrating, the tip of Avery's thumb slid between his teeth.>

I know - I mean...I mean I don't, 'official' sounds kind of second year. We may as well say we're going steady. No matter what we call it, I'm still going to stop in the middle of a room just to look at you, I'll still have outbursts over Kingston flirting with you, I'm still going to go upstairs to bed every night, wishing you were coming with me. I'll still want to do this -

<Both of his hands dropped down on top of Caleb's, fingers curling into fingers to draw him forward just enough for the smallest affectionate kiss he could manage.>

- with you, up there, but..more.

<When Avery leaned back, he sucked at his own lower lip for any lingering film of what Caleb tasted like.>

What...do you want to do?

( SORRY. <_> )

<Avery was, once again, overwhelming. It wasn't just one aspect that made him that way, but a combination of everything. Avery's words were enough to bring to make Caleb grin, maybe a little goofy, and then Avery's hands were on top of his own. His skin tingled at the touch, heart immediately picking up its pace. He had just enough time to realize what might be happening when Avery's lips were on his own.>

<The world stopped for, oh, three seconds. It was a brief, chaste kiss, but it was enough to blow Caleb's mind. His eyes had widened for the first second, relaxed in the second and were about to close in the third when it was all over. But that was fine. He'd been able to watch Avery's handsome face the entire time and that was nothing to complain about.>

<The thought of what Avery had been saying to him exactly started to settle in. "I'd want to do this with you up there, but more." He couldn't help himself. Two lines of red appeared on his cheekbones, a large, broad smile appearing on his face as he looked down. He had to catch his breath and figure out exactly what was going on before he spoke. Right now he was dazed, an unfortunate side effect of having Avery's lips on his own.>

<His eyes drifted across the room for a second and he spotted the back of Mila's head. That was sobering enough to bring him back to the current conversation and off of the cloud he'd been on. He slowly turned back to Avery, breathing for just a few more seconds before he spoke.>

Well, that would depend. I know you like me, but is it a "I like you enough that I don't want to see anyone else," or something different?

It's..yes, it's that.

<It was complete and total ignorance to what could happen when your crackhead ex boyfriend crawled right back into the school, clean and sober and wrapped up in his brand new lease on life and zero obsessive, attention seeking tendencies. Right now, miles and miles away from the remains of any old relationship, Avery was sitting there on his bench comfortable in his very own sense of I-can't-stop-smiling happiness. Nerves were uncharted territory with him. Polite, attentive, well-mannered, but there were still traces of a strange aristocratic superiority that caught the light every once in a while - it wasn't that he walked with his nose up in the air, bragged, or tried to make anybody else feel stupid, Avery was just one of those kids that thought they had everything all figured out from birth. In his own head, he was humoring life by pretending to ever be surprised. Part of what drew him to Caleb so strongly was that all the shock and awe on his end was completely genuine, because here was something that mattered to him, something that wasn't routine or plain.>

So, do you...does that...Fuck, I don't usually do this. Okay, okay, <Avery laughed at himself into both hands, running them back through his hair.> will you, Caleb-Chav-Gentry, be my pre-determined date for everything?

<Oh, had to adjust his tie, too, because that was what gentlemen did.>

No.

<The reply was short and immediate, but a teasing grin followed quickly on his face. His first thought was that this was moving entirely too fast. Really, wasn't it, though? In reality, probably not. He'd been hanging out with Avery for a while now, even longer since he'd attacked the boy on Lucas' behalf. And he'd been hanging out with Kingston as well. Not seeing Avery as often probably made it seem like so much shorter in the time frame that they'd been, you know, into each other.>

<When he considered it, though, it didn't matter. He knew he would regret not being able to really see Kingston or for hurting him if that was the case. But in that moment it was easy to forget those outside influences. All he really could see was Avery, adjusting his tie like a dork with a smile on his face as he asked him out. The "chav" bit made Caleb laugh as well, remembering when he'd dressed up just to amuse the Ravenclaw. That should have been a hint at his own subconscious, or not so subconscious, intentions.>

I don't want to use the term "everything" without having its definition put down in writing, but... <The teasing grin faded into a softer smile, watching Avery through what were obviously affectionate eyes.> Yeah, yeah I'll tentatively agree to "everything." You know, as long as you'll be my pre-determined date as well.

Writing? <Trust supergeek to have a quill on him at all times, the kind magically loaded with ink.> We can do writing.

<Avery couldn't completely remember how he and Lucas got together in the first place - probably with a sloppy kiss or somebody's half-drunk groping in the hallway of one of the Drake family's gigantic summer homes, but it certainly hadn't included an actual conversation. Once the embarrassment-surprise-elation of doing something as bold as actually asking somebody to, in primary school Valentine's day terms, be his boyfriend, Avery still felt this light-headed nervousness that shook his hand a little bit when he went to grab a napkin to press the quill to. In huge looping letters, he wrote out, I, Avery NotAChav Braxton will take Caleb Chav Gentry on nice dates, and sometimes I will surprise him by springing for the whole bill. Since I'm not rich and certainly earned that money, I hope he appreciates it. I like him very much. His goofy smile, his big eyes, what promises to be a perfect body, and most of all, the time he takes out of his day to say nice things to me. I will do everything in my boyfriendly power to make him feel the exact same way as often as I can. This, Avery slid across the table towards Caleb.>

I'm not used to this, though.

<What was he supposed to do? They didn't have the luxury of an entire childhood together, Avery couldn't read him as well as he had been able to Lucas. With Lucas, they managed to live together in perfect harmony, with the actions of one bleeding into the other's so that there was very rarely any..boredom or downtime. With Caleb, all Avery knew was that he liked him. Lots.>

<Caleb laughed when Avery pulled out a quill and began writing. He halfway attempted to sneak a look at what the Ravenclaw was putting down on the paper as he did so, but didn't attempt hard enough for Avery to have to push him back or anything. He had some limited, impish form of patience that he could rely on to be able to wait. You know, even though he was waiting impatiently.>

<The grin grew large as he took the paper from Avery once it was offered, only growing wider as he read over the words. There were faint hints at his cheekbones that he might even be blushing very slightly, but Caleb was getting better at this social awkwardness thing every day. If he ever thought that it might have been because of Mila's pushing him into embarrassing situations so often that he was getting better at something that bothered him, he would never forgive himself.>

<When Avery spoke he looked up, clearly somewhere between touched and amused.>

Apparently not. You forgot to include the clauses that pertain to when I eventually start taking you for granted and what I might have to do were that situation to arrive to bring myself back into your graces, along with myriad of other details that spring up in this whole dating thing. However, I think it'll do for a rough draft.

<He reached over to take Avery's quill and set it down to the paper underneath Avery's writing. I, Caleb "Chav" Gentry will accompany Avery NotAChav Braxton on those aforementioned dates and will sometimes even purpose some of my own. As an addendum, even when the Braxton party seeks to pay for the entire bill I will reject, though I might be persuaded to let him do so eventually, and sometimes I will attempt to do so myself. I appreciate the Braxton party in turn, even despite his past relationship with a particularly venomous shrew, and have chosen instead to focus on his sharp intelligence, shocking good looks and drunken logic as reasons for affection. I will do everything in my boyfriendly power to attempt to keep the Braxton party happy, in particular with the terms of the previous contract. He finished with signing his name with a flourish, one that made it illegible and clumsy-looking since Caleb wasn't used to that kind of thing. In any case he slid the paper back to Avery.>

<From what Avery could read of the napkin between the two fingers dragging it back to his edge of the table, Caleb could have written legal papers for use in court, prenuptial agreements, or a stunning file for divorce. It wasn't all that often someone in the no-brains all-brawn house managed to fit 'party' into their contract-jargon and use it properly in a sentence, and he had absolutely no issue staring down at it with both eyebrows creeping up towards his hairline in surprise. Somebody needed a packet of tiny gold sticker stars so that Avery could thumb one off, stick it to the corner of this napkin, and save it somewhere in his box of ticket stubs and old love-letters just like every teenager had.>

Did yo-- do you practice writing this kind of stuff? Is this not new for you? Have you been sued? Anyway, what to do when you're out of my good graces - do not, under any circumstances, start doing drugs and feeling sorry for yourself. In fact, act like you haven't done anything wrong, but be very subtly, slightly sorry in a way that I'll barely notice, and I'll fall right back into..like with you. Or love, depending on where we're at by then.

I'd give you anything but you want pain.
A little water please
I taste you all over my teeth
Never again

All at once the music stopped, the feeling went away
An ugly picture me and you, but nothing I can change
You know what happens with the lights back on
The less you know the more you want
(And you want, you want)

Have I been sued?

<Caleb's shock was obvious as he watched Avery, eyebrows furrowing in confusion.>

I'm not stupid, Avery. I understand how to put down basic sentences in the English language.

<It was a brief spit of anger that flared and then passed easily into a grin. In a roundabout way, Caleb had taken it as a blow at his intelligence, the one thing that he often zealously defended. Avery hadn't meant it in that way, of course, which spurred the following grin.>

Look, we're bickering already, so, I think that seals the deal.

<He held out a hand to Avery to shake.>

<Meanwhile, August was exhibiting a rather profound fascination in the food on his plate, if not actually partaking of any of it. Seated just two seats down from the happy signatories while they negotiated the clauses of their incipient... thing... he did his best not to look like he'd been eaves-dropping from word one.

Elements of the meal he'd served himself were cut up, salted, peppered, pushed around, but not eaten. Not yet. He was too fascinated by what he was observing. He recognized both of them. Hell, one of them he'd shared a dorm with for five years and change now, and the other... well, August wasn't so sure what to think about the academic Gryffindor. Obviously there was a precedent, but he'd had so little reason to interact with Caleb that he'd yet to render much of an opinion.

Every so often when he thought he could, he glanced at the two of them, eyes flitting over and then returning to the mess he was making of his meal.>

It's legal jargon. I wouldn't know how to make something that believable, and I'm sure not retarded.

<Handshake? Napkin letters? No matter how long this relationship did or didn't last, everything in the last five minutes was more than enough to make it even more memorable than it already had been. Bewildered, Avery reached gingerly out and shook the offered hand all dazed and confused-like, elated and self conscious all at the same time. While his face kept its typical caucasian, British-weather pale, both of his ears managed to flush so red that they practically glowed - and the heat got to him, like thirty second's worth of a fever.>

<Around that point, while Avery was looking around like he'd either won the lottery or gotten in one number short of the winning ticket, he caught what looked like a pair of eyes on them. Another glance, and August was dissecting his food, not interrupting anybody, and..glancing. Maybe it was a sports thing, like Avery was sitting here gossiping with the enemy over quidditch what with all their super friendly hand shaking and furtive note passing. Oh, God. It did look like that. Players got expelled for selling team coordinates, even without evidence. Lock him inside, give cabin fever time to set in, and he'd earn himself a front page for pitching himself through one of the tower windows just to get back on the pitch.>

August!

<If Avery were a cartoon, the words damage control would have crashed down straight onto his head.>

Come here, meet..Caleb.

<The Great Hall was very loud. Cacophony wasn't an inappropriate word for the atmosphere. It was entirely conceivable that he hadn't heard Avery, right? He speared a wedge of roasted potato idly with his fork... glancing up again, to see if maybe the situation had diffused itself. No such luck. His lips pressed together in a self-conscious smile as he set his fork down and moved toward them. Why in the world was Braxton calling him over? To make him pay for eaves-dropping? Even as he approached, he appraised the pair.>

"Hello, Avery... Caleb."

<As if triggered by the slight catch in his voice, the self-conscious smile festered into something so awkwardly pleasant that it was almost pathetic. He didn't know what to do with his hands. Extend one for a shake? No, no. He shifted them behind him, clasping them at the small of his back and adopting the best posture that he could. The fact that he remained standing likely only enhanced the absurdity of the situation, the multiple mis-interpretations, the legislative courtship that he was technically the witnessing party of. Say something, you're just staring at them....>

"I've always been interested in contract law."

<Even August realized how insanely lame that sounded. He tried to adjust his smile, tried to spin the first thing that had come to mind and sprang kamikaze-style from his mouth into an ice-breaker. It wasn't as if he could just flee. Braxton shared a dormitory with him. Whatever this was, it needed to be resolved, lest it drag out for weeks. His nervousness was patently obvious- he was even beginning to manifest something of a flop sweat. Just cut to the chase, I'm a nosey freak and you two are gods. This is what I get for remembering to eat...>

<Caleb felt oddly caught. Being at the Ravenclaw table while everyone was eating was something that he felt oddly weird about. Sure, there was the rule that said you should eat at your own house's table. He didn't think it would be strictly enforced beyond a reprimand, which, let's be honest, would be enough to shatter some of Caleb's self-image. The perfect prefect getting yelled at for being at another house's table? It sounded dumb when he thought about it, but picturing McGonagall's disapproving face looking down at him was almost enough for him to get up and move. The whole thing with Avery had been enough to distract him, and the lingering kind of fuzzy feeling kept him from bolting for the moment.>

<Then August was added to the mix and Caleb put up a smile, but the nervousness was obvious in the wayward Gryffindor. He'd seen August in his classes and knew him in a nonpersonal sense. It was true that the smart ones were often drawn together in smaller circles and he knew that August could be one of his serious rivals for Nerd of the School. There was always that small bit of rivalry that swelled up between people who prided themselves in a field when they met someone of their own ilk.>

We've, uh, met before.

<He grinned to Avery, then to August.>

Same year, you know.

<He was waiting for some kind of reprimanding look from August, but the next sentence that left the boy's mouth was enough for Caleb to pause and blink. It took him a moment to process just what exactly had been said before he burst into a small bit of laughter. Okay, it was probably nerves and potentially inappropriate. And then he really understood what had been said and his cheeks colored. So, his and Avery's exchange hadn't exactly been overly private. It just took someone pointing it out to make him feel it.>

It's... interesting.

<How did he work this out? Caleb was caught in that awkward kind of moment where he wasn't sure what to say. August had obviously witnessed enough to work out what was going on. He was a smart guy. So, Caleb finally smiled, maybe a bit weakly as if still expecting that reprimand.>

Maybe you could help me come up with a better draft sometime. I have to work out all the loopholes, make it pretty tight. Avery's kind of slick in that "smarter than he looks" way.

<Awkwardness all around, then. August nodded slowly in response to Caleb, trying to sort out whether the request for help with contract language was earnest or in jest. The idea of a relationship dictated by a contract... appealed to him, oddly enough. Expectations clear, sanctions clearly outlined. Most of the budding romance he bore witness to seemed so messy. Tears, and snogging in the halls, and quibbling over minutiae. He frowned slightly as he pushed the utterly irrelevant thoughts to the back-burner. He had no one he dared court, and no admirers that he knew of. Why bother?>

I learned a great deal about law from my father... I could probably help you keep him from bring so slippery.

<That... hadn't come out quite the way he'd intended. He'd hoped to make a reply that could serve as an earnest answer while still qualifying as playing along with a jest, but felt that he'd somehow missed the mark. A faint frown formed. His eyes flashed between the two, and his odd smile resurfaced slowly as he thought. So... what was happening here, really, besides the obvious? Was their contract meant to be a secret? That would seem silly, given the very public forum that they'd broached the topic. It was feasible that they were hoping to have his discretion, though, which hardly seemed necessary. Who was August going to tell?>

My apologies for overhearing you, gentleman.

<He came a bit closer and lowered his voice to a slightly conspiratorial stage-whisper.>

I have no intentions of repeating what I heard.

'm an idiot. I don't not think you two would interact, it's just that Ravenclaw..well, not a lot of people really socialize with many of us. We're cliquey and usually the social equivalent of word of the day toilet paper. We're your mothers, we'll say 'it's may I, not can I,' and things like that. Not that August is that way. ..Or that I am. Well, alright, I so--

<Freezing with his mouth partway open, Avery stopped. Red light, tires squealing, metal throwing sparks stopped - oh, and he had the decency to look embarrassed too, as though underneath that rebellious namesake glory and mystery, there was a social cripple who occasionally had to duke it out with anxiety in large crowds.>

Nevermind. I did include a secret clause that says I get half your stuff, though. Imagine how wonderful that would be, Caleb. Me, walking around in chains, grills, and Burberry, dressed to the nines in the most stylish fashions around. You really know how to shop, sweetheart. Oh, there's a clause in there that says I get to use obnoxious pet names that sound bizarre coming out of my mouth.

<They did, really and truly. Sugar, baby, honey, sweetie, pumpkin, it just didn't go with Avery's stylish, half a page of text transferred from book to face look. If anyone got close enough before morning, he usually had overlapping letters written on his cheek in perfect times new roman.>

It happens, August. Sometimes two people are so interesting that you have to.

<Listening to Avery describe the Ravenclaws wasn't the first time that someone had said something to make Caleb wonder if he'd been Sorted into the wrong House. He'd been known to correct grammar in his own house, something that surely hadn't earned him any popularity there.>

<Then Avery spoke of all his chav-wear and Caleb laughed, shaking his head.>

If you do take those clothes, I'll want pictures.

<The "sweetheart" bit was something that simultaneously made Caleb's stomach do a happy flip and cause his cheeks to tinge in embarrassment. Maybe he could convince Avery to use the pet names in private. To pull the attention away from how awkward he felt at the moment, he raised an eyebrow and spoke.>

So interesting that you have to do what? Not that I wouldn't mind the help in writing up another draft of this agreement.

<While he wanted to, he was hard-pressed to disagree with the assessment of their House. After all, even as a member, he'd experienced the cliquishness. Until he'd gotten a few tens of thousands of words in print, he might as well have been a shadow in the tower. It was better now. A little better. He couldn't help but get a bit terse about the lips as it occurred to him that he and Braxton (and the fact that he thought of him by his last name only drove the point home further) barely knew one another, despite having shared living space and classes for the better part of six years. Sure, he knew the guy's habits, his schedules... but everything else was guesswork or second-hand.>

Eavesdrop.

<That supplied to Caleb, when he asked... and it was his turn to feel his cheeks burn just a bit. While it was completely pompous (or perhaps self-deprecating) for Avery to supply that line of reasoning, August really couldn't deny that he was interested. In a vicarious sense. Yes.>

I would... feel a bit strange doing so. In all honesty, I feel very strange for having participated in this... conversation... as much as I already have.

<His hand strayed upward, to straighten out his already-very-coiffed hair.>

I should be going to the library.

<Without eating more than a few bites of his dinner. Every projection he could come up with of where this conversation was headed wound up with him as a third-wheel, to the mutual embarrassment of all involved parties.>

Enjoy the rest of your evening.

<He would linger, smiling that awkward smile, for a few more seconds...>
