Even if Draco was telling the truth and he did need help, it's all way over our heads, y'know. He should go to the
Headmistress, Harry, not turn to you for help.
<She frowned. Harry had a knack for not doing as he was told, and she was worried that Draco might be able to trick him enough to make him to
something foolishly heroic.>

What?!
<Oh yeah, it was easy to get Ron going. His eyes went wide as he watched Harry, glancing to Hermione once to make sure he wasn't dreaming
before he looked back to him.>
Harry, don't be stupid. You're talking about Draco. You've known him for seven years. He'd betray you the first change he got.
<Ron seemed almost on fire at the moment, and the hue of his hair wasn't helping to stop the analogy.>
I mean, c'mon, what about all the crap he's done so far? He's done more to try to get you expelled than anyone. He doesn't
care about you beyond wanting to see you dead. And you're just going to forget all that because... he wants you to risk your neck for
his? Are you bloody mental now? I think the whole school's getting that way.
<And maybe it was a bit too close to Ron having found out about Harry and Ginny for Harry to be tellling him... what? He wanted to defend and be
friends with Draco? Needless to say, that wasn't going over well.>

Hermione: We don't know if the headmistress is safe, but I know it'd have to be someone a lot better connected than I am.
There's people we could ask though, if he was serious. He's not going to give up on his Dad that I can tell though, so it doesn't
matter.
<Harry couldn't have argued that if he'd been able to read her mind, but her doubt was clear enough that he spoke up reassuringly. He had
thought this one through (sort of), enough to restrain any stupid heroic impulses for the moment.>
I'm not interested in finding out what happens if someone asks him to be the one to try and kill me this month anyway.
Ron: Well.. yeah.
<When you put it like that.. Ron was angry enough to make Harry blink though and sit up a bit straighter as he glanced uncertainly at the redhead.
Uh oh.>
He's a bastard. I just wouldn't hand him over to Voldemort, if I could help it. Draco doesn't want me to do anything and I'm not
going to do anything Ron. I just the hate the way Voldemort's got so many people playing bitch, because they're afraid or think they have
too. Besides the ones that enjoy it.
<Harry trailed off, hoping he'd managed to put into words that made sense. He felt tired now, a little sick maybe. It all seemed so hopeless,
so huge..>
Its just sick what he does. What they do.
<Quiet, but vehement. Disgust shone through in the words and was reflected in grim green eyes as Harry's mouth tightened.>
Well you, trust no one and you can never rest
Trust anyone and they\'ll strike while you\'re sleeping
And just as the sun must keep on seeking the west

Maybe not the headmistress. But there's plenty of people who we can trust here -- McGonagall, for one. And keep us updated, in case Draco does...
anything funny.

But you still trust him? After everything? He tells you that he wants to leave Vo-...
<He shuddered and thought better of it before continuing.>
... You-Know-Who and you're just going to believe him? I know you want to be a nice guy, Harry, but you can't be nice to everyone and you
have to, I don't know, think about it. Why would he just want to leave the Death Eaters? Because he might die? He knew that when he went
in.
I don't think he's trying to be your friend. I think he's mad because we put his dad in Azkaban. Why would he choose now to try to be a
good guy? I think he's up to something, probably some kind of revenge thing.

Hermione: I will, I promise. Its why I told you guys today. I don't get it either.
Ron: No. No. I don't trust him. I'm not going to ask him to watch my back. I just think he's gone insane. Or
that the thing with his dad really, really threw him. And he's not planning too, exactly. I just think he might if there was a way. If he's
not just fucking with my head though. Who knows.
<Harry kept his voice calm, serious and low, trying his best to appease the redhead. Not that it took much acting. He was starting to feel a bit
sheepish now, like he had 'sucker' written on his forehead and large bold letters.>
I'll be careful though, I promise. And if he ever does seriously ask me, I'll come straight to you guys, okay?

<He watched Harry for a long series of moments, eyes boring into him as if he could pick Harry's brain apart to make sure what he was saying
was true. He finally nodded, slowly.>
Alright.
<Okay, so he couldn't be mad at Harry forever and had to cut him some slack. He didn't like it, but he would do it.>

<Harry had been good this time. Well, he'd gotten caught with the locket, but otherwise good. No hints to Malfoy and nothing revealed. It was
therefore easy to meet Ron's gaze and hold it. No lies, no secrets.. mostly and he had come straight to Hermione and as he'd
arrived then as well, Ron.>
I did today. I will, promise.
<Not quite a plea, but mindful of the hurt he'd accidentally inflicted, Harry was making the effort to appease the fiery redhead. The quiet
sincerity was there, even as the tension in his shoulders relaxed. It was so good to have Ron back. Definitely not worth losing over someone
like Malfoy.>

And later...
<The familiar scritch-scratch of a quill pen filled the air. An also familiar brown-haired girl could be seen hunched over at her usual
table, over in the drafty corner of the room that people rarely trespassed in the winter. Every once in a while, she'd stop and look up for a few
seconds, staring blankly at the stone wall and scratching her chin with the un-inked end of her quill. Then just as suddenly, she'd be attacking
the parchment again, the tip of her tongue protruding out of the side of her mouth in severe concentration.>

<Not many moments later the quiet was broken as the portrait swung open to admit one chattering redhead. Or at least Ginny was bidding good bye to
someone outside, she came in alone with her bag slung over her shoulder.>
<A brief glance around and the smile that had barely faded made a new appearence alongside an eyeroll as she headed in Hermione's direction,
dropping her bag down and then herself into an armchair with a whumph.>

<She paused her frenzied scribbling to look over her shoulder at her new companion. She smiled warmly to see the redhead but turned immediately
back to her parchment nevertheless, a finger on her free hand lifting in the air as a signal to "wait a second." Had to finish her thought
first. Unfortunately for Ginny, this took a good minute or two -- unsurprisingly, Hermione's thoughts and ideas tended to wind a bit long.>
No, no, I did finish. <Of course.>
I'm working on a novel. I've been meaning to write a book since I was four. <She pet her piece of parchment fondly, a doe-eyed look
misting over her face. A moment or two later, she snapped out of her reverie and turned her chair 180 degrees to face the other girl.>

<It was possible that the moments Hermione spent staring mistily at her book were a good thing since it gave Ginny time to wipe the goggle eyed
expression from her face. Oh, she knew Hermione well of course, but there were still those moments that took her by surprise.>
About to go and stare despairing at my robes for the St Valentine Ball.
<The smile on Ginny's face at least belied the impression that she might be turning into someone so fussy as Lavender or Parvati. No, it would
be a long time get before Ginny was succumbing to panic attacks and clutching Herm's skirt because she didn't think she could look nice for
Harry. Ugh, just the thought of it made her cringe.>

Oh, the ball. I'd forgotten about that thing. I'm not certain that I'll be going.
<No, she hadn't forgotten. She'd been quite grumpy for the past few days about the fact that Ron... well, you know. And so she'd be
going to the ball by herself again and, as far as she knew, so was Ron. What an idiot. It really wasn't that hard. She'd
do it herself but she refused to give him that kind of pleasure. She was considering not attending, as she told the redhead, but knew, even now, that
she would. And she'd look good, too, just to make him squirm. The squinty, nasty look that crossed her face evaporated, however, at
Ginny's change-of-subject.>
Yeah, three or four.

<Ginny was stuck how to respond in that moment. Did she pursue the book and risk ending up insulting Hermione? Or did she pursue the ball? And if
she went with the ball did she play dumb? No, because pretending she couldn't tell Ron must be being a retard was also an insult.>
Has the plot evolved much since then?
<A mischievous smile played on her lips and glinted in her eyes, making sure Hermione wasn't left in any doubt there was teasing going on, but
also sincere curiousity. It seemed far safer to ask what it was about than contest the age like Ron or even Harry might have done.>

<Hermione felt a twinge of disappointment at the fact that Ginny had obviously wholly avoided the dance issue. Though she told herself that she
didn't want to think about the situation and kept herself busy from doing so, it would have been nice to rant discuss things
with somebody as understanding as Ginny. Ironic that she was the problem source's sister.>
<With a little sigh, she reached behind the parchment she had been writing on and from there emerged another piece of parchment -- this
one was extra wrinkly and was already full of Hermione's neat and cramped handwriting.>
I've been planning this book for years. This is the general plot idea right here, and now all that's left is to fill out the details.

<Oh, Ginny was planning on giving Hermione plenty of chance later to rant, the book had simply peeked her curiousity and it was less easy to return
to it later. She wouldn't put it past Hermione to be one of those who'd not let on anything until it was published.>
What genre then?
<Ginny shifted a bit to try and take a peek at the old extra wrinkly parchment. It would be vaguely cute if it was a romance but she doubted Herm
would put quite so much effort into something so frivelous and Lavender-esque so it was unlikely to be just romance if there was any. at least
she'd already said novel so Gin knew it wasn't a text book.>
Shall we go take a look at the robes you're not going to wear to the Valentines Ball then?

<Seven years of hard work could really wear a person down. Each day that drew closer to graduation seemed longer and longer, never-ending and full
of impossible amounts of work.>
<Or perhaps that only applied to the Aurors-to-be roaming the halls.>
<Remy was not roaming this evening. Four classes in one day plus three hours finishing up all of his homework in the library called for a few
hours of real relaxation. The common room was thankfully quiet this early in the evening; no telling how it would get once dinner officially
ended.>
<He was skipping that meal tonight, substituting a several-course meal for a pastry and a comfortable stretch upon one couch, out of school clothes
and in jeans and a hooded sweatshirt.>

It\'s funny how things work out,
The ones we need don\'t know we\'re there,
If I were sand and you were oceans,
The moon would be why you\'re pulled to me.
I wake up and think dreams are real,
I sleep so I don\'t have to feel, the truth that you can never be
The one person that won\'t ever forget me.
I hope that dreams come when I die,
So we can talk & I won\'t wake up,
I\'ll ask how your life worked out,
I\'ll never know that I\'m just dreaming.

<Wandering his way through the portal, looking quite confused by one thing or another, he smiled it away in his own bright capacity and gave a wave
over his shoulder, dismissing the usual ranting and cursing that he drew from the portrait after forgetting the password for the fourth time in one
day. He had other things on his mind. That much was apparent as he bumped into one of the doorways through the narrow passage that opened up into the
common room. Turning back around the proper way, he stood there for a moment, wondering if even the walls in this place changed like the rest of the
castle seemed to. Or maybe, it was just his faulty memory.>
<Grinning brightly, he rubbed the back of his head and wrinkled his nose, his tawny mop of hair tumbling into his eyes.> Kennedy, you dork.
<Chuckling lightly under his breath, forward that lanky, friendly boy walked without further impediment by inanimate objects that sought his secret
downfall, finally settling on a chair by the welcome warmth of the fireplace, his bag tucked at his feet as he sprawled rather unceremoniously.>
<Thankful for a few moments of peace and apparent solitude, he exhaled slowly and rubbed quickly at the bridge of his nose, making a face. The
embarrassing and disturbing events of the day always tried to worm their way back in at times like these, but he wasn’t going to dwell on it and make
himself sick. There was just too much to be done, and he had made -some- progress, though at times it seemed more struggle than success.>
<Not allowing it to dampen his triumphant spirits, he slid an apple from the pocket of his robes and buffed it against the faded fabric of his
jeans, hazel eyes twinkling with an expectant happiness for something so simple. Especially after not eating all day out of simple economy. Most of
the Gryffindor table seemed a rather uncomfortable place to be, after his attempts to ignore the comments and rather graphic notes that had been sent
his way. He wasn’t angry. He understood it. But even for the unstoppable Kennedy, he had a limit that he had to acknowledge and accept.>

Ah. So that's why you're rarely at supper. Stealing food and eating it secretly in here while the rest of us, oblivious as we are, wander
around outside.
<She wasn't nosy, per se. In fact, Mila would've left Kennedy well alone had he not been an object of vague interest during their shared
Magical Theory debacle - to be extremely frank, she was .. curious. His movements and mannerisms were so slightly off that they begged some kind of
intrigue. And that, while a completely reliable excuse, was not the case. Mila was more often than not bored, and even if she'd only exchanged a
couple of words with him (fairly attractive, too.), they were just enough to bridge into an actual conversation.>
You were in ah . . Magical Theory. Yes. With our unfortunate and somewhat rattled Professor. Were you actually as at ease as you seemed? Or .. just a
good actor?

<Blinking, he craned his head around, looking this way and that for the source of the voice, and upon finding it, offered a brilliant and halfway
embarrassed smile, the apple still held halfway in it’s path towards his mouth. Hazel eyes affixed on her face, noting that highly individual
signature of presence, his mind quickly walked over details. Wondering, and always curious, but silent on that subject for now.> Stealing? Oh, no.
I don’t think so. I got one earlier when everyone was eating lunch, and just saved it for later. I’m sorry. I wasn’t aware that it was a problem, if
it is.
<Mentally retracing his steps, trying to recall any faculty member warning or giving instruction not to eat in the common rooms or anywhere else
beyond the Great Hall, he rest the well-shined apple against his thigh, gaze still studying her intently.> Yes. Magical Theory. Professor…Sparrow,
right? I knew it had something to do with a bird, but I’m terribly awful with names, you’ll have to forgive me.
<Sitting up a bit, he tucked the apple aside and bent his lanky form over the couch to offer her a calloused, ink-smudged hand, not wishing to seem
rude or impolite in the slightest, the smile warm and affecting, and for all other appearances, astonishingly genuine.> Kennedy. It’s nice to meet
you. Well, I’ve already -met- you, but not formally. Not that -this- is really a formal meeting, but…

<Blue, those eyes of hers. A perfect aryan blue to go with the fine, pale, aristocratic blonde. They were rounding slowly, eyebrows creeping lazily
higher upon her forehead the more Kennedy spoke; it was a charming prose, really, not fast, not slick or smooth or dishonest. It was something almost
completely foreign to Mila's ears, simply because of the obvious sincerity practically dripping from every single pore upon her housemate's
body.>
No-- No, I didn't assume you were stealing. I was, ah, joking, actually. Sorry about that.
<Cue the same half-nervous face-splitting grin that broke open around their Professor's discussion of his past exploits.>
Consider yourself forgiven. I take it you're not one of the underclassmen well versed in his, ehm, well, whatever it was he did while he was a
student here. Just a year out, if I recall correctly. One would have to bother the Slytherins to find out, I assume, and I'd rather not go
hunting them. Oh, apologies.
<She could just hear their lilting French accents now - Two weeks in school and she's forgotten how to introduce herself and
exhibit proper manners! Mila was quick about extending that hand now, wasn't she? As though this were some kind of pageant in which points
were taken off for not producing a speedy enough high-end introduction, complete with a firm grip, a bright smile, and a little bow once her fingers
had unclasped from the grip of his own.>
It's formal enough, really. Better than passing notes in class. Mila. Nice to meet you as well. ..Nice to talk to another student,
actually.

I know -exactly- what you mean. Seems it‘s hard to get a word in edgewise between everyone being so…busy, right? <Again, that wide, generous smile
lit up his buoyant, hopelessly expressive features, not an ounce or trace of the disingenuine to be found in the midst of his natural, infectious
exuberance.> I know I’m probably just as guilty, always getting lost and running this way and that to get to the classrooms on time. Doesn’t
exactly make me the most amazing at holding a conversation that makes…well…much of any sense.
<Vibrant eyes shimmered with good-natured humor as he released her hand, the shake gentle for a boy of his age, but direct and without much
ceremony or thought. The empath’s mind was flooded momentarily with the torrent and assault of minute details that most simply ignored or overlooked,
nuances and tendrils of emotions creeping out to ensnare him, but he held fast with a sheepish grin.>
Not that most of my conversations -make- much sense in the end, but being in a great, big hurry doesn’t help matters. Or so I‘ve been told.
<Tucking an errant lock haphazardly behind his ear, his eyes remained intent on drinking in all he could of this new source of interest and
conversation, the apple all but forgotten on the couch.>
<A puzzled look soon dimmed the smile, a head canted in curious, unspoken questioning at her reference to Professor Sparrow’s past.>…No. I’m
afraid I don’t know much of anything. <A weak, apologetic look given, the borderline goofy grin rose to make light of his inadequacy.> This is
my first year. My first year -here-, at least. I wasn’t permitted before, but they thought it was important I finish out my last year here at
Hogwarts.
<Wrinkling his nose, he leaned in enough to be playfully conspiratorial, though maintaining a respectful distance all the while as he lowered his
voice.> I think they needed an excuse to get rid of me before I ate them out of house and home, honestly. There’s only so many times you can get
caught with your hand in the icebox in the middle of the night before facing some kind of repercussion.
<A light, sunny laugh broke the mock-seriousness, clearly enjoying himself. Just having someone to talk to was a rare luxury, and he was quietly
thankful for it.> Or more likely, they thought it might be good for me to get out and go to school with people my own age. It’s been an adventure
so far, but I’m excited. Is it always like this? The school, I mean.
<Fastidious and energetic? That was a polite way of putting it.>

I'd say you're rather good at holding a conversation. You certainly wouldn't bore anyone covering so many vast topics in one breath.
You're also probably beneficial to anyone attempting to lose weight by, err, coming into class panting like that all the time. Just try not to do
it with, say, McGonagall or her teacher's assistant. The both of them are notorious for being merciless and routinely bitchy.
<Mila's fingertips found eachother, pressed, and bridged, the perfect pair of indexes resting steeple-style right below the angle of her noble
chin.>
Au contraire. No use calling yourself boring or disinteresting or anything like that. I've got euphemisms pouring out of my arse, and yes, I will
use them on you.
<It was odd how that'd been the most blunt terminology Mila had ever used in her seven years here. The first three had been used bookworming
with the Ravenclaws and studying up to be a proficient point-winner and expert suck-up teacher's pet, the following three had been confined to
the only two people she'd ever bothered conversing with, and the last, now that the pair had graduated and moved on, would apparently be applied
to branching out her social interests. The day had already been extraordinarily promising, what with thoroughly embarrassing herself in front of
attractive professors.>
Oh, first year? That must be sort of strange considering you'll barely have time to really feel at home. Why weren't you accepted before?
Surely it didn't have much to do with the ice box and being anti-social and all that. But yes, the school is always like this. In fact, it's
rather boring and lacking in scandal at the moment. I'm sure once you talk to more people, you'll be sucked right on in with the rest of
them.

Thank you. For the compliment, that is. Not many are liable to say that about me, but it definitely makes me feel better. I can never really tell how
I‘m doing, and I‘m awful at reading reactions. Ironically enough. <Admitted openly and honestly along with that friendly smile, a momentary wince
following the statement about McGonagall, his nose scrunching up adorably as he sunk down in his seat a bit. Like a great, overgrown puppy he was.>
Oh. Yeah. That. A couple teachers have been on me since I got here, but that just makes me try harder, you know? To be on time. I hate disrupting
people’s lessons, and I know it’s not easy on them. I have gotten a little better. Or maybe I just got faster. <He winked and let loose a bright
laugh, another absent shove of that unruly hair from his eyes.>
Merlin knows, I’m not used to all of this…space. I wanted to go somewhere before, and it’s just a short walk down the street. Or down the stairs. This
has been quite the adjustment, but it‘s endlessly fascinating. And exciting. I don‘t find it dull at all, and I‘ve never had much of a head for
intrigue. I suppose I‘m too simple. <He shrugged and grinned contentedly at the memory, a comfort that he’d grown far too accustomed to. This was
his chance to expand and to see the world. Or, at least to see some small shred of it that he wouldn’t have before.>
<There was, however, a momentary hesitation on his part as he thought how best to answer one facet of her question, an inner debate raging when he
opted for the simplest form of honesty available.> It’s not that I wasn’t really…accepted. I was home schooled by my family at first. They passed
on, and I was taken into another family’s care, learning a lot of the basic essentials that had been neglected. I’ve only just been able to clear the
equivalencies for my age, and so they thought this would be best for me. To have something that most of the other wizards my age have experienced. And
that it might help me later on, if I ever try to find employment.

You're welcome.
<Pride and prissiness forced formalities out of her mouth before all else. It had become like an unstoppable mechanism, both inconvenient
and embarrassing when one wished to identify with all the other students who bothered to speak as though there wasn't a Ladies Rules book shoved
firmly up their rear.>
Well, at least you aren't pathologically annoying like a lot of the students .. I'm sure you'll be given credit for trying. Especially
when they notice your presence starts sooner and sooner. If you'd like, I could, err, well, draw you a map. Or show you around. Or something.
Whatever you're most comfortable with. This place is bloody gigantic, but the twists and turns start to form a pattern after you've
walked through them enough.
<But, simple? Mila didn't catch herself before that heart-shaped face of hers canted confusedly to one side.>
How does being unused to overly large spaces make you simple? It just makes you .. easily entertained. Anyone who tries to impress would love
your company - but I'm sure you can be rather impressive yourself.
<Ah-ah, never stupid enough to think that even the most innocent veneers didn't have something that would've turned a head beneath their
surface. It wasn't that Mila expected him to start speaking parseltongue or change into some gigantic canine animagus or anything, but he
certainly transcended the Harry Potter version of normalcy so thoroughly that she could raise an eyebrow and speculate.>
D'you think you'll rally for another year here? One certainly wouldn't do you justice after, well, whatever. What was homeschooling
like? Where are you from, originally?
<That was another thing she apparently lacked any sliver of control over - asking a ridiculous amount of questions without filtering them for how
personal they might've seemed. Ah, well.>
.. Sorry. You've managed to make me curious.
